A rather overcast morning saw us pack our rainmacs and head east towards Weymouth, for a trip to Chesil Beach and Portland Bill!

After some very informative nature themed science lessons, we climbed our way up and over the billions of smooth pebbles which form the Chesil Beach peninsula towards the sea. There were families fishing and having picnics, listening to the calming lapping and tapping of the waves upon the stony shore. It was peaceful…but cold. So we grabbed our bags and picking up a mermaid’s purse along the way, we raced back to the car for a far less windswept lunch and a discussion about lighthouses! Next stop…Portland Bill! Chesil Beach was fun, but the visitors centre more so, with its interesting displays and examples of animals, bones and dinosaur games! Hopefully the slightly less than a bargain family ticket to climb the lighthouse would prove to be worth it!

Nate climbed it like a beast, fearless on the narrow, steep metal steps and pushing to the front of the tour group! Clever infrared beams (outside at the top of the lighthouse) set off the fog alarm, when the beam was broken. After the lighthouse tour the boys enjoyed games and some fact finding, including seeing an oil lamp which was the light form for the main lighthouse lamp, used well into the 20th century.

Then it was off to explore the land around the tall structure! They boys just kept on climbing…down and down and down further until the waves were lapping at their trainers. They loved it!…and so did we!
