Michigan – 1st May 2025

We were headed to a museum today! Think the Science Museum in London, but on a smaller scale! The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves and spent a good hour walking around each of the experiment zones, playing with electricity, air, water, tsunamis and mountain ranges and laughed while being blasted in the face with the thrust from the back of a rocket!

We then entered the ‘classroom’ where Ell made a cardboard helicopter cam toy and Nate, a crank toy! Nato was his usual defiant self and did NOT want to make the aforementioned crank toy, even though he ‘got to bend wire around nails bashed into a wooden block and draw a silly face on his man whose legs moved round and round, woo, woo, woo!’ Mummy convinced him by saying he could also use the glue gun like Elliott was! ‘Wait?! What?! Ok…FINE! I’ll do it!’ Which small crank toy will STILL be with us when we reach Canada!?!

After lunch in the empty cafe, we then headed into the historical section of the museum, where they boys enjoyed learning about the Hellcat Tank Destroyer – 2,500 of which, were made in Flint, Michigan, where the museum is. They then chose their favourite Chevrolet car in the ‘car hangar’ and moved round to looked at how wood was chopped down in the forests centuries ago, then transported via river, as well as how it was sawn in different ways for various purposes. They are also always interested in the history of the Native Americans and never fail to comment on how sad it is that their land was taken from them. Mummy is also creating a game about selling goods for beaver pelts, (as seen at the museum) which we did not have time to play, as we had to hot-foot it back to Hartland to collect the Wimbledon-Emig’s from school!

The museum allows free entry to those living in the same county, which is quite wonderful for all the children (and parents!) living close by. You could see all the donations made to the community project by local businesses, as well as from those further afield, listed on the wall. General Motors and some sports teams included. What a great idea, set up and result.
